Female infertility and its treatment. Infertility is the inability of the body to conceive. It could be due to factors in the male or the female, or both. This is usually determined after a 12-month period of trying to get pregnant. The reason for this time frame is because the body needs to return to its normal natural state once a woman stops using contraceptive methods. If after a period of 12 months of trying to conceive the pregnancy has not occurred, then there may be factors that are holding back the conception process. In such a case, you need to consult a fertility doctor.
Infertility can occur in anyone, and there are many reasons why you or your partner may be infertile. Depending on your diagnosis there could be possible solutions that could help you overcome infertility and help you conceive.
There are a number of different treatments available that your fertility doctor might recommend. Here are some of them.
ICSI – Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection treats male infertility. Only one sperm is needed for this treatment. That a sperm is used and injected directly into the egg. This treatment is viable for couples where low or immobile sperm is a problem.
IUI – Intra Uterine Insemination is the process of collecting semen where it is then inserted directly into the cervical canal or into the uterine cavity. It is also known as artificial insemination and the sperm can be from the male partner or a sperm donor. It is an option for those couples where sperm motility is poor or there is a low sperm count.
Induction of ovulation – this is a method where a woman is given ovulation induction medications which are commonly known as fertility drugs. It is used to stimulate the follicles in the ovaries that produce multiple eggs in one cycle. It can also be used to control the time the eggs are released or when ovulated.
IVF – In Vitro Fertilization takes place in the laboratory and is the process of sperm and egg binding. The embryos are then transferred to the uterus so that the pregnancy can begin. In vitro fertilization is done together with fertility drugs to control the timing of conception and increase the chances of pregnancy.
There are other fertility treatments such as pre-genetic diagnosis (PGD), assisted incubation, in vitro maturation (IVM), egg freezing, sperm washing, cryopreservation and blastocyst culture. The treatment option you choose will depend on your individual diagnosis and the fertility doctor’s recommendations.
